I’m Officially Done With Being A DC Sports Fan.

[Editor's Note: This is a sports post. If that ain't your thing, keep it movin'.]

There’s breaks, bad luck, and then there’s the eternal curse that seemingly hangs over all DC sports teams.

The Redskins have a ballerina playing defensive end, a novice head coach who doesn’t even know the team colors, a primadonna running back who gets into shouting matches with local sportstalk hosts, and a fratboy tight end who inadvertently posts a nude picture of his junk on his personal blog. Don’t be deluded by that fluke win over the Saints. This team is headed to 3-13 with a bullet. Sorry Skins fans.

The Nationals couldn’t beat most Single-A teams.

I don’t even care enough about the Mystics or DC United to come up with a pithy remark.

The only DC team I’ve bothered getting behind in my dozen or so years living in The Urreah is the hapless Wizards. They’re the rare team that’s more exciting off the court than on. There’s the all-star small forward who flashes gang signs during pregame intros. The immature power forward who can’t stay out the club long enough to work on his post moves, and catches solicitation charges when he does. Two underachieving centers who routinely fistfight each other in practice, but can’t battle for an offensive board when the games matter. But perhaps the biggest personality on this team full of outsized egos is none other than point guard Gilbert Arenas.

I’ll admit, I was once an Arenas fan. He’s the biggest star to hit DC sports since Chris Webber’s brief stay here in the mid-90′s. He drops 30 a night with ease. He hits game winners. He can shoot the ball with amazing precision from two steps inside halfcourt. He is personable and has a very popular blog on NBA.com. He gives away his jersey to a lucky fan after every game. He puts butts in the seats. He’s flashy. He’s worth talking about, which is no small feat in Skins-obsessed DC. You can’t not watch him when is game is on. Witness his 60 point instant classic vs the Lakers.

But he’s also totally immature for a 26 year old. He couldn’t spell defense, let alone pretend to play it. He hogs the ball. He is prone to playing out erratic vendettas with his coaches while on the court. He is flighty and temperamental. He gets too caught up on stats. And perhaps worst of all, he’s now had two serious knee surgeries in the past 2 years, despite the fact that the team gave him the keys to the franchise in the form of a $111M contract this summer. Better or worse, my team has hitched its wagon on the hopes that he’ll magically grow up and get us past the first round of the playoffs again.

So what does this numbnut go out and do? He waits the entire summer before deciding to get a third knee operation, effectively screwing every Wizards fan for yet another season.

Gilbert Arenas had a third operation on his bothersome left knee Wednesday morning, once again throwing into doubt his status for an upcoming Washington Wizards season.

Arenas had a “moderate amount of debris” removed from the knee after experiencing swelling and discomfort during his rehabilitation. The Wizards offered no timetable for his return — beyond the fact that he obviously won’t be ready for the start of training camp next week — but Arenas told The Washington Post that he plans to be back on the court in early December, which would rule him out for the first month of the season.

The surgery is the third on the knee in 17 months for Arenas, who missed 69 regular-season games last season and had to shut himself down in the playoffs. It also raises more doubt about the wisdom of the Wizards’ decision to give him a six-year, $111 million contract in July.

When a team, against its best judgement, gives you a $111M contract after you’ve essentially missed the last two seasons, the least you can do to return the favor is properly rehab your injury so you can earn your money. This nimrod waits until the eve of training camp, and despite what he says, rumor has it he will likely miss most of the season, and his knee could be permanently damaged a la Grant Hill.

Thanks a lot, Gilbert.

Question: Is DC the Worst Sports City in the nation or is there actually someplace more pathetic?

I feel ya on this, Average Bro. I’m so tired of trying to keep the candle lit for the Skins year after year. I’m tired of being a team groupie of an unworthy team. Not to mention the ish I hear from Dallas fans (doesn’t it trip you out how half the folks in the DMV are Cowboys fans…but have never set foot in Dallas nor TX? That’s a totally different story.) Something’s gotta give.

Ditto. I was gonna jump on the Skins bandwagon after Sunday’s win, but then I remembered they were the Skins. They will eventually disappoint you every time.

And yeah, the Cowboys fans are nothin’ but a bunch of git-wits. Most of them bamas couldn’t find Texas on a map, and just cheer for Dallas to spite Skins fans. It’s pretty pathetic.

E-A-G-L-E-S! (Had to get that out of the way, even though we lost two night ago…DeSean Jackson:Die!)

Anyway, I heard the Southeast Jerome/Brian Mitchell verbal fisticuff live and I fell the hell out. I’ve lived in Philly for the past four years, right during those T.O. days. I know when T.O. started getting reckless and caused us to lose games, fans peaced out on him. I don’t think Skins fan would care about Clinton talking out the side of his neck is the team was winning games. As long as he wasn’t lifting weights in his driveway, Clinton could whatever the hell he wants.

Clinton is productive. He’s a 1500 yard back when he wants to be and when the Skins have a stable system. The offensive system has change about three times since Clinton has been there.

What also kills Clinton is that fact that two of the best RBs in the league are in his division: Brian Westbrook and Marion Barber. He can’t compete with that and Skins fans would give an arm/leg/nose combination to get either RBs here.

Winning cures everything in the Metro. I’ve been in DC for the past two weeks (originally from the Metro) and to see the change in the fans’ demeanor in a matter of two different weeks is incredible.

As for the Bullets (forever the Bullets, sorry lol) … if you keep losing in the first round like you do every year to Cleveland, that whole team is going to be dismantled in about four years.

Cleveland.

NBA Championships = 0
Super Bowl Appearances = 0
World Series Titles = 0 since 1948

But beating up on the Wizards in the playoffs help make up for it a lil’ bit.

Hey, AB, that money’s not tied to performance, and actual games played?

If not, he’s like many a CEO–up the value of the company’s stock, cash in, and let the company take the fall.

AB,

I actually had the pleasure of meeting and getting an autograph from Mr. Arenas back in 2003 at the NBA All Star festivities in ATL. (I HIGHLY recommend you attend one of these if you can. Hit up the Jam Session on Saturday.)

Before he was Agent Zero, he was “That dude sitting at the end of the signing table.” “The rookie.” The “I-have-no-clue-who-he-was-if-he-knocked-on-my-door-with-2-large-pizzas” guy.

He was playing for the sorry Warriors then.

I’ll never forget Gilbert sourly sitting there, bored out of his mind. He was clearly going thru the standard PR motions for David Stern, but you could tell he’d rather have been somewhere else. Arenas signed my poster, which unfortunately is missing since moving into the new house.

Now, he’s got millions of reasons to smile. He can’t stop smiling.
I’m glad for his bank account. But my first impressions of him will always be that Saturday afternoon in Atlanta.

I met anchor Ed Gordon and actor Chi McBride there too, who were very cordial. Maybe Agent Zero could study their dossiers on that
a little bit.

Seattle is worse off. The baseball team stinks, they just lost their basketball team to Oklahoma, the Seahawks got monumentally screwed in the Super Bowl and now might not win the worst division in football and their hockey team plays 3 hours away in a different country.

I know where TX is on the map thank you very much! That’s that state right next to Georgia right? LOL Just kidding, really I know where Texas is. The Skins suck and that’s all there is to it. Sorry I just can’t get behind them even if I am from VA. And yes that was the most idiotic yet smart move from Arenas. We all know why it’s stupid. But it’s smart because he’s getting paid to do NOTHING. Which is what everyone would LOVE to do. LOL

AB I’ll take the “say something nice challenge” for the Wizards.

When I went to Howard they had college night and the tickets were $10. That was nice.

I am so disappointed to hear that you are a fan of that professional football team in Southeastern Pennsylvania (Can’t bring myself to say the name). I can only thank them for letting their best reciever evar go for nothing. Thanks.

@AB @Franklin
Cleveland is pretty BAD. that sounds like it deserves the top spot. New Orleans has to be close. Followed by Kansas City.

no way you can lump the mystics and dc united in the same category. DCU is the only successful team in the DMV and the atmosphere at games is great. Understandable if soccer ain’t your thing, but you gotta give RFK a shot.

I don’t feel sorry for DC sports fans at all…Skins fans have to be among the most obnoxious fans in the world….when the Skins were winning, you couldn’t even mention football with Skins fans foaming at the mouth.

So, these years of suckiness are your comeuppances AB…man up and deal with it!!

By the way, when are the Skins gonna change their name? Talk about some racist sh*t….

@ franklin

Just rub it in, why don’t ya?

@ EG

I’ve met plenty of the other Wizards (Antonio Daniels, Etan Thomas, Antawn, saw Caron at the mall once) over my years as a partial season tix holder, but never Gilbert. I’ve never heard anything bad about him interacting with fans, but I wouldn’t put it past him.

@ huntdaddy

Skins fans are obnoxious, and so are the DC legion of Cowboys fans, which is a phenomenon I still don’t fully comprehend. But these folks don’t hold a candle to Philly, NY, and Boston fans, who are the worst.

@ Paul

Point taken. And I forgot all about the Caps. My bad.

@ #6

True, the Emerald City got screwed. For a city with such nice facilitie for baseball and football, it’s a shame they couldn’t foot the bill for the Sonics arena.
