Since I don’t illegally download and have a child who eats like a linebacker, reality I don’t have the money or means to come across new music very often. Thus, my latest obsession is free stuff like promotional mixtapes and podcasts. Among my favorites is Gordon Gartrell Radio.

No, Gordon Gartrell isn’t some iced out DJ from Bankhead. If you run your mental Rolodex enough, you’ll recall the infamous episode of The Cosby Show where Theo had Denise sew him a designer shirt because his parents wouldn’t buy him one.
Borrowing on the same middle-classed sensibility is Gordon Gartell Radio, which is a weekly music and talk podcast hosted by the world’s greatest unknown rapper, Phonte of the hip-hop group Little Brother[1], and NYC turntablist DJ Brainchild. Each show is a nice mix of neo-soul[2], 90′s R&B, and underground hip-hop tunes, plus Phonte’s irreverent takes on current events, humorous skits, and listener emails. You sorta kinda have to listen to really get the concept, but trust me, you’ll like it. It’s the sorta show I’d do if I had the inclination and talent.
Sync up your iPods and enjoy the show. You can also listen online if you’re not MP3 player-savvy.

[1] My favorite rapper, and my favorite group, BTW. Take one guess which state they’re from.
[2] Man, do I hate that term.

Folks who know me personally know I’m an underground hip-hop head. We’re not talkin’ about Yung Bergs and Soulja Boys of the world. I’m more of a Little Brother, Jean Grae, Wale, Cool Kids, Tanya Morgan type of dude. So, it’s no wonder one of my current favorites is Supastition, who just happens to represent The Greatest State Evar.[1] Quit crying about how bad hip hop is and peep Kam’s newest video “Black Enough”, download his free Self Centered EP, and cop his new album Leave of Absence.
